Used to treat common skin issues such as wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines, Botox and Dysport have become two of the most popular injectable products used to relax facial muscles on the market. While Botox has been available in the U.S longer and is perhaps more popular, Dysport offers many of the same benefits and has become quite popular as well since being approved by the FDA in 2009.
When comparing the two products, many questions arise and we’ve done our best to answer some of the most pressing ones below.
Dysport
A botulinum toxin that makes facial muscles relax, Dysport is injected under the skin and aimed at specific areas. It has many similarities to Botox given that both products are injectable, non-invasive, and used to treat common skin issues.
Typically, Dysport is used to treat moderate and severe cases of wrinkles and results usually last for three-to-six months. After that time period, patients will need to receive additional dosages to maintain results.
Botox
Similar to Dysport, the active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin A, which leads to softer and more relaxed muscles by blocking nerve signals. Given that the muscles relax, wrinkles and forehead lines are then removed for a certain period of time. In this case, results usually last three-to-four months.
While Botox and Dysport are quite similar, Botox is made by Allergan, a U.S market, while Dysport was primarily used in Europe prior to being approved by the FDA
Concentration
When it comes to the concentrations of these products, Dysport is the more diluted of the two, which is the case because Dysport uses smaller protein molecules during the process of relaxing muscles. Because the molecules are smaller, they are less likely to be broken down, which makes the results of Dysport appealing to patients.
In addition, the difference in concentration also makes Dysport the logical choice to use when treating larger areas, as it spreads quickly and works to treat issues such as wrinkles.
Molecular Weights
Aside from the different concentrations, Botox also has lower variability in its molecular weight, which does result in some differences.
For example, while Dysport tends to be effective over a larger surface area after injection, Botox’s consistency in its molecular weight allows it to be used to target more specific areas such as the “11” between your eyebrows.
How Significant Are The Differences?
Typically, Dysport and Botox can be used to treat the same issues given that they have the same active ingredient. And because they are both injectable and minimally invasive products used to relax muscles, the different aren’t all that significant.
However, it is always important to know the ins and outs of a product in order to make the best decision to treat your particular issue.
Wrinkly Eyes
Botox seems to be better suited for smaller areas and has been proven to be able to treat the “11” between your eyebrows, making it a smart option for wrinkly eyes.
Crow’s Feet
Crow’s feet are the fine lines that appear around the eyes and Dysport is believed to provide the better results when treating this area because it diffuses easily to larger areas.
Forehead Lines
Once again, Dysport is believed to be the best option when treating forehead lines due to how easily it spreads.
